Château Rieussec is a sweet white wine ranked as Premier Cru Classé (French, “First Growth”) in the original Bordeaux Wine Official Classification of 1855. Belonging to the Sauternes appellation in Gironde, in the region of Graves, the winery is located in the commune of Fargues.

The unrivaled wines of Sauternes are almost mythological in origin. They are the gift of misty mornings in a unique region south of Bordeaux whose sole raison-d’être is sweet wines. Sauternes resides within Graves, the only region other than Médoc with wines classed in the Bordeaux 1855 Classification.Sauternes and its sub-regions—Barsac, Preignac, Bommes and Fargues—have garnered 12 First-Growth classifications and its storied Chateau d’Yquem is the only one to receive the First Great Growth classification.The Semillon-based dessert wines of Sauternes are the gift of a benign infection of noble rot, the fungus botrytis cinerea. Botrytis robs grapes of moisture, dehydrating them and concentrating their sugars while bringing yields down to starvation-levels--producers might hope for as much as one glassful of juice per entire vine. This concentration of sugars and acids also imparts characteristic nutty and apricot flavors. The outcome is a divine balance of alcohol, acidity, and sweetness in extremely long-lived wines that are viscous but not cloying. (vivino)
