La Tâche is an Appellation d'origine contrôlée (AOC) and Grand Cru vineyard for red wine in the Côte de Nuits subregion of Burgundy, with Pinot noir as the main grape variety. It is situated within the commune of Vosne-Romanée and is a monopole of the winery Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. La Tâche borders on La Grande Rue in the north, and mostly on Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru vineyards in the east, south and west. The AOC was created in 1936.
Depending on the vintage, La Tâche and Romanée-Conti are often neck and neck for the top spot in the Burgundy Grand Cru rivalry. Both are monopole Grand Cru vineyards owned by Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, both command astronomical prices per bottle and, in the best years they share a similar profile. The Oxford Companion to Wine describes them as “voluptuous in textures and flavors,” with, “aromas of truffles and wet earth.” For many years La Tâche and the adjacent Les Gaudichots were separate vineyards, but in 1936 parts of Les Gaudichots were promoted to Grand Cru and absorbed by La Tâche. Now, La Tâche is one of the larger Vosne-Romanée Grand Cru vineyards with over three times the production of Romanée-Conti. (vivino)
